11 mars 1942 – Si j’essaie d’approfondir cette «honte prométhéenne», il me semble que son objet fondamental, l’«opprobre fondamental» qui donne à l’homme honte de lui-même, c’est son origine. T. a honte d’être devenu plutôt que d’avoir été fabriqué. Il a honte de devoir son existence – à la différence des produits qui, eux, sont irréprochables parce qu’ils ont été calculés dans les moindre détails – au processus aveugle, non calculé et ancestral de la procréation et de la naissance. Son déshonneur tient donc au fait d’«être né», à sa naissance qu’il estime triviale (exactement comme le ferait le biographe d’un fondateur de religion) pour cette seule raison qu’elle est une naissance. Mais il a honte du caractère obsolète de son origine, il a bien sûr également honte du résultat imparfait et inévitable de cette origine, en l’occurrence lui-même.

La vie – nous étions ici confrontés au principe fondamental devant lequel tout le monde s’arrêtait, l’abîme où, dans son abandon de valeurs, tout le monde se précipitait aveuglément, se retrouvait et se taisait, bouleversé. Mais supposer que le créateur s’était spécialisé dans la vie, pour la mettre en valeur, la souligner et pratiquer avec elle autre chose que son habituel badinage, me semblait absurde. Cette force avait certainement bien d’autres champs d’activité et jetait ses regards de-ci de-là, sur des choses bien éloignées d’un cas aussi confus. Ainsi, l’un veut admirer dans mon film un lyrisme de la rage. Un autre y a découvert que le passage d’une époque historique comportait une certaine mélancolie. D’autres, qui surestiment assurément les raffinement de la vie sociale actuelle, m’attribuent un certain dandysme. En tout ceci, cette vieille canaille d’époque poursuit sa manie qui consiste à nier ce qui est et d’expliquer ce qui n’est pas.

Ceux qui voudront découvrir des alternatives à l’existence dans l’auto-satisfaction stoïque ou l’arrêt que s’impose l’individualiste devant le miroir feront bien de se rappeler une époque où toute condition sur la conditio humana était imprégnée par l’évidence du fait qu’un jeu incessant de contaminations affectives se déroule entre les hommes, que ce soit dans la proximité familiale ou sur le marché ouvert. Bien avant que les axiomes de l’abstraction individualiste n’aient pu s’imposer, les psychologues-philosophes du début des temps modernes ont fait comprendre que l’espace interpersonnel est saturé d’énergies symbiotiques, érotiques et mimétiques-concurrentielles, qui démentent fondamentalement l’illusion de l’autonomie du sujet.

Faire l’ange, se faire passer pour un ange, voire être angélique, passe encore. Mais être ange? Comment diable peut-on être ange? Il y a bien, certes, le «saut de l’ange», mais aucun ange ne saute en réalité. Il y a bien, aussi, des moments de suspension étranges dans les conversations, et l’on dit alors qu’«un ange passe», mais généralement c’est que précisément rien ne passe ni ne se passe. Ce qui se cache sous la figure du messager céleste apparaît bien obscur. «Être ange, c’est étrange», écrivait Prévert, aussi est-il sans doute plus sage de maintenir sous son voile cet être mystérieux, et de ne le saisir dès lors, justement, que comme figure. Figure de l’ange donc, ou l’ange comme figure de la figure, figure par excellence.
Or si par figure on veut dire une forme qui cristallise des significations, un précipité en quelque sorte, au sens chimique du terme, c’est-à-dire un «corps […] formé par réaction entre deux ou plusieurs substances» (TLF), alors la figure de l’ange serait une espèce de précipité dans le vide: le sédiment, dépôt, reste ou résidu d’une rencontre inouïe entre l’homme et son dieu, une hypostase entre ciel et terre. On notera en outre que précipités, certains anges le sont deux fois, lorsqu’ils chutent encore pour devenir humains… L’ange, en somme, ne cesse, comme figure, de (se) précipiter.
