From the land of  slot machines in grocery stores and poolside blackjack comes the next  generation of gaming —space bingo. The <a href="http://www.bigelowaerospace.com">Bigelow Aerospace</a>-developed payload is the only bingo game of its kind. It is set to be launched with Genesis II in early 2007, and should be up and running by the middle of the year. This payload includes a unique enclosure design that reduces material weight while being structurally sound. It can autonomously mix and select bingo balls using a network of fans and solenoid activated levers. Its interior is adorned with space graphics and color lights set to the game cycle, and it houses 75 balls marked from B1 to O75. This is no blue-hair grandmothers’ plastic dome with a crank handle. But gamblers take note: There is no gambling involved here. Ce printemps, n&#8217;en déplaise à Villepin et aux esprits chagrins, a de la gueule, et même du chien.</p></blockquote>

<p><span class="lettrine">N</span>ous sommes régulièrement exposés à une panoplie de discours préventifs prenant pour objet l&#8217;usage nocif de drogues – ou substances psycho-actives – diverses. La valeur pathologique leur étant attribuée repose notamment sur deux principes généraux : le premier a trait à des rapports d’extériorité, le second à des rapports d’intériorité. D&#8217;une part, la consommation de ces drogues altère l&#8217;expérience d&#8217;une réalité envisagée comme référence ou règle normative. Cette altération de l&#8217;expérience a pour corollaire nécessaire l&#8217;altération comportementale du sujet intoxiqué, sujet dont la conduite peut alors être jugée « anormale » (inadéquate, menaçante, déviante) pour la communauté. D&#8217;autre part, l&#8217;usage de ces drogues entraîne une diminution progressive de l&#8217;autonomie du consommateur, une dépréciation du rapport à soi. Notons au passage que ces considérations générales valent également pour ce que l&#8217;on nomme le &#8220;jeu pathologique&#8221; (dépendance à la pratique des jeux de hasard).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Or, parallèlement à ces discours préventifs, il existe une tendance discursive prégnante insistant sur les bienfaits d&#8217;une dépendance à la consommation d&#8217;objets, de sujets, d&#8217;espace, de temps, d&#8217;énergie (shampoing, vedettes, voyages, soduko, sports). Dans tous les cas « vous ne pourrez plus vous en passer », et c’est tant mieux. Qu’est-ce que cette fonction <em>positive</em> de la dépendance/dépense ? Exemple d&#8217;une mise en forme de ce que nous pourrions appeler « l&#8217;hypothèse divertissante » :</p>
<blockquote><p>D’autre part, il semble que les pages de variétés aient comporté également certains jeux, auxquels on engageait les lecteurs à participer eux-mêmes et qui stimulaient leur saturation de savoir : une longue note de Coldebique consacrée au singulier sujet des « mots croisés » nous en parle. Il y a avait des milliers et des milliers de gens, en majorité astreints à des travaux rudes et à une vie pénible, qui, à leurs heures de liberté, se penchaient sur des carrés et des croix formées de lettres, dont ils remplissaient les vides selon certaines règles. Gardons-nous de ne voir que l’aspect ridicule ou absurde de ce jeu et de nous en moquer. En effet, les hommes de ces devinettes enfantines et de ces dissertations culturelles n’avaient rien d’enfants innocents ni de Phéaciens espiègles. Ils vivaient au contraire une vie d’angoisses, au milieu de la fermentation et des séismes de la politique, de l’économie et de la morale ; ils ont fait force guerres atroces et force guerres civiles : leurs petits jeux culturels n’étaient pas tout bonnement un enfantillage gracieux et dépourvu de sens, ils répondaient à un besoin profond de fermer les yeux, de se dérober aux problèmes non résolus et à un pressentiment angoissant de décadence, pour fuir dans un monde irréel, aussi inoffensif que possible. Ils apprenaient avec constance à conduire les automobiles, à pratiquer des jeux de cartes difficiles, et se consacraient rêveusement à la solution des mots croisés – car devant la mort, la peur, la souffrance et la faim, ils étaient presque sans défense ; les Églises ne pouvaient plus les consoler, ni l’esprit les conseiller. Eux, qui lisaient tant d’articles et qui entendaient tant de conférences, ils ne prenaient ni le temps ni la peine de se fortifier contre la crainte, de combattre en eux-mêmes la peur de la mort, ils vivaient pantelants au jour le jour et ne croyaient pas à un lendemain.</p></blockquote>
